Artist is a song about struggling with mental health; that wish to be loved but at the same time not feel you're worth loving, that feeling of not wanting to be alone but wanting to be left alone all the same, that feeling of never being understood for how you're feeling, and wishing for someone who does.
The truth is that you are never as alone as you think you are, and that you are loved, and cared for and cared about. You are not alone in your battles, and there is nothing wrong with admitting that you are not okay, and seeking help.
'Artist' hopes to inspire people to share their stories and create a conversation about mental health that doesn't currently exist. It hopes to inspire people to reach out to those in need, or reach out for help if you're in need. It hopes to allow people to stop treating mental health as a taboo subject, because it has serious repercussions if not dealt with.
Above all else, it hopes to remind people that you are not alone, and that there are people out there who understand, relate, care and love you.
lyrics
I am not
As strong as you think I am
I'm like a door that's falling off the hinges
I am lost
All alone in the wilderness
Stranded in the forest in a lightning storm
I'll pick up my finest brush
Start tracing the lines
And you won't see me cry
Save me the speech
Stay away from me
I will find my inspiration
From the pain I feel inside
I'll paint a portrait of my broken heart
On the canvas of my right forearm
Let my paintbrush leave its mark
'Cause I'm an Artist don't you know, know
I am not
The person that I appear
Behind closed doors I'm like a two-faced stranger
Try to keep
My head above the water
But the waves won't hold back and the sharks are circling
I'll pick up my finest brush
Start tracing the lines
And you won't see me cry
Save me the speech
Stay away from me
I will find my inspiration
From the pain I feel inside
I'll paint a portrait of my broken heart
On the canvas of my right forearm
Let my paintbrush leave its mark
'Cause I'm an Artist don't you know
See my art
See my heart
See the paint rush down and colour my shirt red
See my scars
From this love
See my portrait under my shirtsleeves
Save me the speech
Stay away from me
I will find my inspiration
Save me the speech
Stay away from me
I will find my inspiration
From the pain I feel inside
I'll paint a portrait of my broken heart
On the canvas of my right forearm
Let my paintbrush leave its mark
'Cause I'm an Artist don't you know
But like all my insecurities
I'll hide my scars beneath the seams
And you won't see me where I bleed
I'm the Artist you don't know, know
I'm an Artist don't you know, know
I'm an Artist don't you know, know
I'm an Artist don't you know, woah oh
I'm an Artist
