We all have these moments in our lives when we think that not feeling anything is preferable to the emotions we're feeling in that moment. Sometimes we wish for it - because at least it lends some stability to our lives, at times when we are at our most vulnerable.
It is also at these times that we can sometimes turn to substances - substances that can also be incredibly addictive, if not for its ability to regulate our emotions, then at least for its ability to help us feel a little less pain, even if it's just for a moment.
Monochrome talks about that feeling - that desire to make everything just go away, that desire to take a pill or a drink just to make the music stop. But the truth is that emotions are what make us human - they are what makes our lives so unique. If we cease to feel anything, while we may no longer feel pain and sadness, we also become unable to feel love and joy in the process - and what is life without love and joy?
Much like Artist, we hope this song is something people can relate to in their struggles, or in their past; we also hope this song can encourage you to realise you are never as alone as you think you are, and such solutions are unsustainable at best.
Hang in there, everybody. Things often can and will get better from where you are now.
lyrics
[V1]
Fade to black
Let the colours just stop running
Say goodbye
But don’t stop me from leaving
About to crash
I don’t have my hands on the wheel
Before impact
See my will in the mounds of steel
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, let me switch it off
Let me turn it out, the lights
Oh, let me switch it off
Let it all just disappear
[Chorus]
Let the music just stop playing in my head
Monsters under my bed are still better than the ones upstairs
Seems like the madness’s never gonna end
Hit the switch with my tongue to stop it playing again
Start seeing stars
Constellations in the pavement
The beat’s slowing down
Can’t keep up with the conversation
Been riding the waves
From the roller coaster to the sea
See the world in monochrome
Like the TV screens from the 70s
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, let me switch it off
Let me turn it out, the lights
Oh, let me switch it off
Let it all just disappear
[Chorus]
Let the music just stop playing in my head
Monsters under my bed are still better than the ones upstairs
Seems like the madness’s never gonna end
Hit the switch with my tongue to stop it playing again
And I read the stories that my friends had send to me
And I shouldn’t but I could get addicted to the fluoxetine
Kill every emotion that’s been taking over me
Wouldn’t life be easier if it all stopped momentarily, oh
[Chorus]
Let the music just stop playing in my head
Monsters under my bed are still better than the ones upstairs
Seems like the madness’s never gonna end
Hit the switch with my tongue to stop it playing again
Let the music just stop playing in my head (Oh let the music)
Monsters under my bed are still better than the ones upstairs
Seems like the madness’s never gonna end
Hit the switch with my tongue to stop it playing again
I don’t need you to tell me when it kicks in
‘Cause I’ll feel it, yeah I’ll feel it
Oh, I don’t need you to tell me when it kicks in
‘Cause I’ll feel it, yeah I’ll feel it
Oh, I don’t need you to tell me when it kicks in
‘Cause I’ll feel it, yeah I’ll feel it
Oh, I don’t need you to tell me when it kicks in
‘Cause I’ll feel it, I’ll feel it, I won’t be feeling
